Wisconsin’s state labor activists suffered a major setback Tuesday. The Wisconsin state Supreme Court overruled a county judge and reinstated a law that strips tens of thousands of public workers of most of their collective bargaining.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports new legal challenges to the legislation, which has drawn national attention and protests, are expected to emerge.

The state Supreme Court’s opinion ruled that the lower court had exceeded its jurisdiction by striking down the law, writing “Choices about what laws represent wise public policy for the state of Wisconsin are not within the constitutional purview of the courts.”
