Walmart is having trouble setting up in India, because of corruption?

India is one of four countries (Brazil, Mexico and China are the others) where Walmart is investigating claims that its people bribed local officials in violation of the US’s Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. In November it suspended several top executives of the India venture, including the chief financial officer.

India’s market is so corrupt that not even Walmart, so big it blocks out the sun, can’t even make inroads.

Under any case, I don’t think there’s money for Walmart to make in India – Walmart takes advantage of dirt cheap labor and economies of scale to make a profit in the states. With no presence in India, I don’t think it can take advantage of the latter, and labor prices being what they are in India, I don’t think it can take advantage of the former.

Walmart just lost its third country head in Asia in two years – Quartz.
