Toyota’s “Free Piston” engine achieves an efficiency rating of 42%

Toyota says this mechanically simple engine achieves a claimed thermal-efficiency rating of 42 percent in continuous use. Only the best, most complicated, and most expensive of today’s gas engines can come close to that number, and only in specific circumstances.

More importantly, if the engine is producing electricity (and not rotational motion) there’s no need to route the power through an inefficient transmission/differential powertrain.

Couple this with in-wheel electric motors and you can blow most other cars out of the water in terms of efficiency – without the range anxiety that comes with EV’s.

No Crankshaft, no problem: Toyota’s free piston engine is brilliant [Road & Track]
